On drawing – part 2

At Elding Oscarson we love drawing by hand. We use it in our everyday notebooks, meetings or lunches to talk, share and make architecture. It almost transformed into a language of its own, half intuitive - half reflective, half naive - half serious. Some drawings we do are completely disconnected from proportions and are just compositions of shapes on a blank paper or ways to explore lines. Behind the poetic of the shivering line, the beauty of imperfections, drawing by ...

On Curved Lines_Elding Oscarson_Livet Som Kreatör

On curved lines

In the past, straight lines represented an aspiration to create perfection. Architecture was used to underline the difference between what was artificial and what natural. Pure forms and pure geometries against flexibility and spontaneity of nature. In this scenario curved lines were not admired but if we think about what Antoni Gaudì  introduced in Casa Batlló at the beginning of the last century or if we read the words of a the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer we can agree that something happened: “I’m ...

On daily life at Elding Oscarson

This week we couldn’t manage to follow the ‘On series’ we started with our posts in Livet som Kreatör. So instead of writing on an aspect of architecture daily life we decided to give a preview of what we are facing right now at Elding Oscarson. The office has quite a lot of projects at the moment so the rhythm is quite hectic. The deadline for Skissernas museum Tender is getting closer and there are a lot of things to ...

On drawing – part 1

To Niemeyer, Siza or Le Corbusier free lines many would nowadays prefer a realistic 3D rendering. With computer assisted techniques, drawing seems no longer a necessary skill for architects, and it has even become quite old fashion or strongly nostalgic to represent architecture by hand. But as this skill slowly disappears or merges with illustration it seems necessary to underline the real value of architectural hand drawings. Architectural sense is far from being rational and good architecture can’t be described ...

On details

Often we hear ourselves and other architects comment on nice detailing, but we seldom discuss what we actually mean. Details are not a separated layer simply applied to a building - details are in fact the building. A smooth surface without joints is a detail just as much as a jointed surface would be. Details cannot be reduced to simply being a product of a particular drawing or a certain scale, or just being the art of joining things together. ...

On Tools_Elding Oscarson_Livet Som Kreatör

On tools

Pens, rulers and drawing tables used to be the main tools to draw architecture. Today, architectural practices are using more and more computers to produce these drawings. Actually, the tilted drawing tables that used to fill the architect offices have been replaced by horizontal ones, supporting larger and larger computer screens. More than the enormous impact computer performances have on architectural productivity, this tool, as every tool, has an impact on the architects themselves, their behaviours and the way they ...

On defining the facade_Elding Oscarson_Livet Som Kreatör

On defining the façade

Clients and non-architects are always asking about the façade, as soon as a volume study is shown. Though it’s an understandable question, the particulars of the façade is secondary at that stage of the process. First, we need to find a sensible spatial system for the building, a good volumetric effect on the site, and a good disposition. We need to try doing magic with the program to free the plan, taking care of movements, vistas, axes. We need to ...

On 3D (8)_Elding Oscarson_Livet Som Kreatör

On 3D

For the last 30 years the three-dimensional computer modeling has breaded a large family of architects eager to push architecture into a world of shapes that could hardly be described until then. This is probably why 3D is very often associated to an architectural style, an esthétique of NURBS, splines and fractals, whereas it could simply be a tool for the architect. For Skissernas Museum competition, we did not use 3D as a conceptual tool, although we were experimenting non-orthogonal ...

On masters

Among Swedish architects, there is not much of seeing oneself as a part of a tradition, or school, that is responsibly developed with each new generation. The lack of this is probably a function of a society that encourages independence and individualism, and perhaps also due to a society that sheds anything but a flat hierarchy. Or, rather, seemingly flat. As I understand the mechanism of this flat hierarchy, everyone is by default seen as equally pleasing, but when somebody ...
